Where the Money Goes “The Mango Tree Kids” project, in Mozambique, has been going for a few years. It has its origins in a young man who noticed that the number of unattended children (orphans) seemed to be increasing, and that these children at night, would go and sleep under the mango trees in the wild. He summoned the help of the youth in his community and his parents and started to feed and care for these children on what he could raise. Now the children have been placed with families in the community to care for, but are fed and educated centrally. The numbers swelled as AIDS, malaria and TB took their toll and they now care for over 210 children. They are registered as an NGO in Mozambique and have their own bank account, but still struggle to raise funds to feed and care for the children who range from babies of under two years to teenagers. They receive no permanent form of support. At the moment they are only able to provide a single meal a week for the children. The funds raised this year will provide an additional meal per week for the children as well as to repair their water pump that was being used to irrigate their own vegetable garden used to feed the children.Anna & Beth from Saltspring Organization for Life Improvement and Development (250-537-0863) visited this project in March. For more information, please contact Colleen Bowen 250-653-4003.
The Salt Spring and Southern Gulf Islands Community Services Society 's purpose is the promote, plan and develop comprehensive quality community services. The funds raised are designated to assist parent and child bonding. |
